Budget Truck Rental Review

Author by

PROS / Budget offers a wide territory, a good selection of additional equipment and a great price.

CONS / The company does not offer any guarantees and they are lacking a few services offered by competitors.

VERDICT / Unless you’re looking for a trailer rental, budget is a great overall option.

Budget Truck Rental is our Top Ten Reviews Gold Award winning truck rental service for providing extensive territory, a good selection of services, a number of additional equipment options, a great price and decent customer service. Overall, the only problems with the service are that it lacks a guarantee, does not offer storage pod moves, trailer rentals and tie downs. While their price is not the lowest we looked at, it is still very affordable and the benefits far outweigh any problems with the service overall.

No matter how big or how small your move, Budget has you covered. They have service covering local moves, statewide moves and even selected international moves. While the company offers services to those moving to and from Canada, travel to Mexico is prohibited under your rental agreement. As long as you can take your specific items from country to country, Budget will be there to help you move it.

The truck rental services company does offer a good number of options for your moving convenience, but they do not offer an exhaustive list of services. If you only need to move a small load, you can rent a pickup truck or a van, pickup trucks can be found on the Budget Rental Car site, rather than the moving truck site.

For bigger moves, the company offers 10, 16 and 24 foot moving trucks. The two things they do not offer are trailers and movable storage pods. While renting out towable trailers seems to be a basic option for rental truck services to offer, only U-Haul has these available for some reason. As for the storage pods, they are a relatively new concept and only two companies we reviewed, U-Haul and Harper, offer these.

This truck rental services company not only rents out autotrailers, they also have partnered up with DAS to provide hassle-free auto-shipping for those who are traveling a long distance. This way you can decide to move your vehicle on your own or have it shipped to your new home. If you have a lot of work to do, they have also partnered with Moving Staffers so you can get help packing, unpacking and loading your property. If you need to move out before you are able to move in to your new place, the company has partnered with Public Storage to ensure that you have a secure and inexpensive storage area where you can keep your things until you are ready to move in.

Additional Equipment

When it comes to other moving supplies you may need, the truck rental services company offers an array of useful products, including boxes, tape, bubble wrap, mattress covers, padded blankets, and dollies. They do not offer tie-downs, but ropes and other tie downs are fairly easy to procure on your own and you often do not need them when using a van or moving truck.

Of all the truck rental services we looked at, Elite had the lowest prices, but Budget and Penske were right behind them. Local moves will cost you around $30, plus $0.79 per mile. If you want to opt for the collision wavier with a $500 deductable, it will cost you an additional $18.

If you’re planning a long-distance move, Budget has a fair price to offer, as it will cost around $1700 to move across country from La Mesa, California to Hinsdale, Massachusetts. This is approximately 3,000 miles, but the price will vary depending on where you are moving from and to. The company will also provide you with up to ten days to complete a move this long, which can ensure you have plenty of time to get to your destination without depriving yourself of sleep and food.

On the downside, this lengthy trip would have to be performed by only one driver or you will have to pay an additional fee to add on other licensed operators. Many of the truck rental services competitors offer three drivers or more without an additional fee. Budget may want to consider adding such generous terms because no one should be expected to make such a massive journey all on their own simply to avoid violating the rental agreement.

It is worth noting that Budget charges the same for a ten foot truck as a sixteen foot truck on a long distance move. So if you’re at all worried about space, it’s advisable to take advantage of the larger truck, even if you will be getting less fuel efficiency.

Customer Service

When it comes to customer service, Budget is good, but their lack of a guarantee makes them fall short of great. They do not offer price matching or a safety guarantee of any type, which can be disappointing for those looking for the company to stand behind its services. The company does not guarantee availability of its trucks or accessories, so if you are interested in renting a hand truck or a vehicle trailer, be sure to arrive at your location early because these are issued on a first come, first served basis.

Nevertheless, the company does provide a roadside service if something did happen to your truck while you were using it. Their website also has an array of useful moving tips that can help you plan, pack, load and unload your property to make this stressful process as simple as possible.

One of the nicest features they offer that few of their competitors seem to provide is a pickup service, meaning you can ship your car to your new home (or sell it all together) and not have to worry about getting to the rental truck service desk to get a hold of your truck. The only other truck rental services that offer such a service are Enterprise and Harper, neither of which is very highly ranked in our reviews. If you are interested in using the pickup service, be sure to call the location ahead of time, as not all areas offer this option and those that do require you be within five miles of the rental location. Pickups must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance.

It should be noted that those under the age of 24 may want to rent elsewhere, as renters between the ages of 21 and 23 will need to present two forms of ID and pay an extra $18 service charge per day. There are no drivers under the age of 21 allowed behind the wheel of the vehicles. There are exemptions for military renters, corporate customers, and government employers. This is not something we reviewed the companies for, but it is a good thing to note when considering truck rental services, particularly if you are under the age of 21.

Despite a few minor flaws, such as a lack of a guarantee and no trailer rentals, Budget Truck Rental is a great truck rental services company. They offer very competitive pricing, a good number of services and good customer service, even without a guarantee to back it up
